Becoming a Licensed Unity Teacher

Prerequisites:

  1. Complete 250 hours of Unity's Spiritual Development Program.
  2. Be an active member of a Unity church which is recognized by the Association of Unity Churches International ( The Association).
  3. Enter into an agreement with your sponsoring minister regarding your future role as a licensed Unity teacher in a specific ministry.
  4. Mail a Letter of Intent to the Licensed Teacher Coordinator (LTC) at the Association (see address below).
  5. Have access to a computer and the Internet and have the ability to communicate via e-mail and to open attachments.
  6. Take and pass a psychological evaluation before beginning the program. See schedule below.


Letter of Intent:

Each potential licensed Unity teacher candidate is required to write a Letter of Intent and mail it to the LTC at the Association at the completion of the Spiritual Development Program and before beginning Leadership classes. This letter is to include the following:
  1. Candidate's name, home address, phone numbers, e-mail address.
  2. Number of Spiritual Development Program hours completed.
  3. The month and year you plan to begin attending Leadership classes.
  4. Your chosen Focus Area.
  5. Name of your sponsoring ministry and minister.
  6. Your sponsoring minister's e-mail address and ministry (if different from your ministry).
  7. Your sponsoring minister's signature, confirming their willingness to be your sponsor.


Psychological Evaluation Requirement:

Each potential licensed Unity teacher candidate must successfully complete a psychological evaluation during their first week of Leadership classes. The written portion is administered on Monday evening; the interview with the psychologist is on the Saturday following Leadership class week. Please adjust your travel and lodging plans to allow for this requirement. It is your responsibility to contact the Licensed Teacher Coordinator well in advance to schedule this evaluation. After this requirement and other prerequisites are successfully completed, you will be be a Licensed Unity Teacher Candidate.

Submitting Practicum Documentation
Practicum requirements are explained in detail in the Licensing for Teachers booklet, available at www.unity.org. As you complete the required assignments, send the documentation to the Licensed Teacher Coordinator, preferably by email. All submissions must be typed rather than handwritten. All documentation is due by the dates noted in order to be invited to the noted SDS.



SDS Schedule and Document Deadlines:

Skills Demonstration Seminar (SDS) is the final week of training before you are considered for licensing. Attendance at SDS is by invitation only. All requirements (class and practicum) must be completed and supporting documentation on file in the Licensed Teacher Coordinator office at the Association of Unity Churches International three months in advance of the SDS session you plan to attend. Practicum documentation is to be submitted as you complete the requirements. This enables the Licensed Teacher Coordinator an opportunity to review and give you feedback on your work.   2010 SDS Dates Documentation is Due
Spring 2010 Monday thru Thursday, April 12–15 January 12, 2010
Summer 2010 Monday thru Thursday, August 9–12 May 9, 2010
Fall 2010 Monday thru Thursday, November 8–11 August 8, 2010



Updating Your Contact Information:
You are required to inform us when you have a change in any of the following: address, phone number, e-mail address, name change, change of sponsoring minister or change in sponsoring ministry. Please send this information directly to the Licensed Teacher Coordinator.

This newsletter is written for licensed Unity teachers and for those desiring to enter the Licensed Unity Teacher program. We have an opt-in policy, which means that you must sign up for this yourself. Helpful Tip for LT Candidates:
In order to become a Licensed Unity Teacher candidate, you must first complete the prerequisites, which includes successfully passing a psychological evaluation. Successful completion of Spiritual Education and Enrichment Leadership courses does not guarantee admission to the licensed teacher program. Any practicum work completed before being accepted into the Licensed Unity Teacher Program will not be accepted as having satisfactorily completed the practicum.
