Service Is Love in Action
by Marj Kirlew
"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life,
that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself."—Ralph Waldo Emerson
Service is simply the act of doing something helpful. It can be anything from holding the door open for someone, to joining the Peace Corps. Service allows us to understand the impact we can, and do, make on others. It helps us to realize our potential and connect to the people we serve. Through even the simplest service, we work to better the world.
There are many places to serve within your own community. Food banks, homeless shelters and assisted living facilities are examples of places that could use volunteers. Local parks might need volunteers to help clean up the grounds. You can also look for organizations like Habitat for Humanity, who ask for volunteers to help build houses. You might also look into becoming a volunteer firefighter or EMT. These are just a few examples of ways to serve your community. Keep your eyes and ears open; I'm sure you can find even more ways to be of service!
"Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve.
You don't have to have a college degree to serve.
You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve.
You only need a heart full of grace.
A soul generated by love."
—Martin Luther King Jr.
