What Goodness Grace Is

In Unity, we affirm that grace is God's goodness, given to us in greater proportion than we give of ourselves to God. It is all that God is, and God gives grace to us freely, unconditionally, and automatically.

God's grace is God's love, life, and wisdom.

By God's grace, live in God's love

Picture the world fully invested in the Golden Rule: “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you” (Mt. 7:12). Living in God's grace means this kind of love, showing others the kindness and respect we want for ourselves.

When we live in grace, we give others the love we have received from God and remember that we can't give others more than God gives us. In this way, we become the instrument of God's love to the people in our world, and we find that more love pours through us than we thought possible.

Tip: Get outside your skin. Think of a person in your life who isn't treated as well as you'd like to be. For a moment, imagine what it feels like to be inside his or her skin. Now, what can you change about the way you relate to this person.

By God's grace, live in God's life

We've probably all felt “it” that intangible something which we might have called inner strength or inner conviction. Or maybe it felt like wisdom or peace of mind or love.

Whatever it was, it helped us surmount the seemingly insurmountable or break through when all hope seemed lost.

God's grace helps us do what we don't think is possible. So living in God's grace means that stone walls turn into doorways and big barriers melt into mere speed bumps.

Tip: Expect grace to unstick what's stuck. If you can't find a resolution to a problem, stop trying to figure it out by yourself and redraft it as a matter of grace. Ask God about opening the flow of that “intangible something” by affirming: Whenever I think, "It's impossible!" I expect grace.

By God's grace, live in God's wisdom

“Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Mt. 6:33). This is the way of true wisdom.

We must:
  • Give our full attention to the things of God
  • Be open to the divine direction and inspiration we receive in our quiet moments with God
  • Follow through on that guidance and direction

Tip: Check your listening skills. Identify a trusted, wise friend or family member and open a line of conversation about the insight and inspiration you discover in your quiet times. See how your idea of divine guidance in your life matches up with how your friend sees you. By talking about the influence of grace in your life, you unleash it.

Grace is goodness

Aware of the flow of life, we are also aware of the flow of God's grace, blessing us in every part of our lives. We give love as we wish to be loved. When we see challenge, we find peace in the confidence that the grace of God will carry us through. And we follow the guidance of God as we live with respect, honor, and dignity.

Affirmation:
I am a beloved child of God. With gratitude, I fully accept the grace of God, freely given to me.
