Why We Turn to Prayer

We’ve all been there—a moment so shocking it feels as if the air has been sucked out of the room and time itself has stopped. For some of us, this experience comes in a doctor’s office. For others, a tragic news report. Sometimes it arrives in the silence after hard words of truth have been spoken, leaving us with the question: What now?

In those moments, when we’ve been rocked back on our heels and life suddenly feels too heavy to carry alone, something within us stirs. We reach for that which is eternal, for what steadies us beyond our present experience. Almost instinctively, we pray.

But why prayer? Why, amidst uncertainty or fear, is prayer the response that rises up within us again and again? The most natural answer is this: When we are uncomfortable or walking through an unfamiliar season, we reach for what feels steady and sure: We reach for God. Beyond circumstances and without condition, our instinct is to turn to the Presence that has walked with us before and will walk with us again.

Prayer Changes Us

In Unity we know that prayer changes us, not God. Prayer opens the door to a higher thought, to clarity and peace when anxiety threatens to consume us. It clears the mental clutter so we are able to access divine wisdom within and move through each circumstance grounded in the truth that we are never without and never alone.

Charles Fillmore wrote, “The highest form of prayer is the affirmation of truth.” And so, we pray affirmatively. Not seeking something “out there” to fix whatever is before us, but knowing we have access to an unlimited supply of divine power and inner resources to see us through to the highest and best outcome, no matter what we face.

Prayer nurtures the body and mind. It soothes the nervous system, slows the breath, and invites us into stillness in an otherwise hectic and noisy world. In prayer, something shifts: Confusion gives way to clarity, fear gives way to faith. Our focus moves from worry and dread to what we long to see made manifest—peace, harmony, healing.

Prayer is not just personal; it extends far beyond our own hearts. When we are praying for others, we are not asking God to intervene as if God were far away. Instead, we share the strength of our prayer consciousness by holding others in the light of truth, seeing their infinite capacity to be restored and renewed. We see the truth of their being until they can once again see it for themselves.

We Are Praying With You

In Silent Unity^®, we say, “We are praying with you.” This statement carries profound meaning. It reminds us that no one ever prays alone. Collective prayer multiples intentions and magnifies love. When we pray together, spiritual energy expands, touching not only the loved one we name but all of creation.

This is the essence of affirmative prayer. It is powerful because we aren’t waiting on God to show up and do something. Rather we pray knowing God is already here, already active, and already expressing in and through us. Not to be mistaken for wishful thinking, affirmative prayer is steadfast faith.

Prayer steadies us. Prayer connects us. Prayer transforms us. When we remember this and act from this place of knowing, it becomes not a last resort but a first response. In prayer, we remember, “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds …” (Philippians 4:7).

Whatever we face, whatever the world may bring—we pray.
