"Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God." Exodus 20:1-5

Question:

I lost my Bible in our move. I am not able to give you the Scripture—please forgive the ad-lib. How can I apply this with my husband … he does not even utter the word God, and claims he does not believe in God anymore. After 27 years there has been trouble in our marriage in the last few years. Did I put my husband first, and not God. I always pray and feel God is the FIRST in our marriage. Thank you.

Comment:

This, the first commandment, is the central theme of the entire Bible: Put God First! Jesus helps us understand this teaching as a directive to make our spiritual purpose, and our true spiritual identity, the focus of this life experience. It's what he means when he tells us "Seek first the kingdom and its righteousness." When our primary purpose is to be a clear and open channel for the energy that is God, then everything else—our human needs and desires—will fall into their proper place. But if we make any of those human needs and desires our primary focus, the result will be a life experience of conflict and duality. It's important to remember that we're not trying to placate a distant God. We're intent on releasing our own Christ energy—the Presence of God in us. Our closest relationships are intended to be a means of releasing that energy of love freely. Your husband does not have to be an obstacle to your spiritual purpose; he, too, is God in expression whether he chooses to acknowledge that or not. Jesus said there were two great commandments: Love God and love one another. So long as that is our intention, we cannot possibly be out of alignment with our spiritual Source.

Blessings!
