After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)

Comment:

This verse reports the fifth of the Seven Last Words, assembled from all four Gospels. (No one Gospel reports all seven utterances.) The scripture apparently refers Psalm 69:21: “They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”

Jesus knew that “all was now finished,” not in terms of his life but in terms of his work, his ministry. With that realization, there is no further need to remain in the human form that has been through so much suffering. Thirst is an attribute of our dualistic mortal bodies; our spirit is never thirsty because we are eternally part of the flow of the Infinite.  In realizing his last human sense of lack, Jesus becomes ready to fully embrace the Allness of his spiritual self.   Blessings!
