Matthew 18:1-4 "At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, 'Who is the greatest...'"

"At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, 'Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Mt. 18:1-4).

Question:

This statement has always intrigued me and I have tried to figure it out. I think children are innocent and unconditionally loving and maybe it means that we need to become as a child (unconditionally loving, without prejudice or hatred.) I think sometimes that maybe it means that children are spontaneous and very joyful for little things like blowing bubbles or playing with a balloon or running on the grass. Maybe it means we should be thankful and grateful for everything in our lives – for flowers, nature, small pleasures, etc. I would love to know how this phrase is interpreted metaphysically. Thank you very much.

I think your comments express the essence of this passage very well. To "become like little children" is to become open, trusting, joyful and loving – without all the intellectual static we accumulate as our human lives unfold. Because their brains are not yet filled with human thoughts, children tend to live more from their hearts. And it is at the same heart level that we must make the connection with Spirit that will allow us to enter the kingdom.   Blessings!
